The Headstrong Club is the spiritual descendant of a political debating club which met at the White Hart in Lewes in the latter part of the 18th Century. Tom Paine was a frequent speaker, and was often awarded the ‘Headstrong Book’ (apparently a specially inscribed lexicon) for his contributions. The present Headstrong Club was founded in 1987, the 250th anniversary of Paine’s birth, by David Powell and John May following the publication of David’s book about Tom Paine: The Greatest Exile (Croom Helm, 1985).

The Press is open to view from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. It may be in use when you visit, or demonstrations of 18th century letterpress printing can be arranged by appointment.
